Spiders WIP

Well much like everybody else my hobby has fallen silent over Christmas! It is impossible to work in retail and have a life during December.

Seeing people start to post again, though, has encouraged me to find some time to hobby and I thought I would take the time to share my work in progress.

Here are some pictures of the unit of spider riders Im working on right now, still unpainted. Since my army is going to be entirely Night Goblin I had to find a way to get rid of the common goblins that ride the spiders. So, what Ive done is made these into 'cave spiders' that have been caught by Night Goblins and then ridden, although they dont have quite the same natural skills to ride as the common goblins do!

Its looking like Im going to struggle to finish my £50 worth by the end of January but I suppose since im now broke after xmas Ill have nothing better to do with my time!

Anyway, here they are so far.

Painting Progress

It has gone very quiet, but now the first part of Christmas is done and I'm a phone call to the council away form being and official Wycombe resident. Though it's about time I get on with some much needed hobby.
I had a bit of a Hobby night last night and painted 20 plague monks, and built annother 20 more. Which leaves just a whole load of bacing to do, Joy! Thought I'd do my clanrats black and its not only because its a bit of a copout but more because it will make them stand out from the slaves as they'll were dirty brown rags and i can do cool dusty bottoms on the rags. That'll take me another coupple of nights then I'm well on track.

20 models down 42 to go! How are the rest of you getting on, its the Christmas limbo week and thoses of you with normal jobs are off so no excuses!

And thought Goldsmith was going to join us too, Flello, Seals, Morton can you all kick his ass as not my job anymore!

Happy new year!

Lions and tigers and bears oh my!.....

.........Crap and a Dragon

Gone quiet on this run up to christmas hasn't it.

Well any way. I spoke to Gareth and his plague rats and they say they're going to get some help from those jezzail fellas and maybe even a hellpit when it comes to fighting.... i believe his words were... 'gits who bring dragons'. With these units he is pretty confident he could have a decent go at a dragon and i'd be inclined to agree.

So once he came up with this i said i'd spite him and not take a dragon just because he'd prepared for one.

Now i have decided i'll have the best of both worlds and create a list to spite him by not taking a dragon and going super magical.

Then also create a list involving a dragon, an abyssal terror and two varghulfs just to see if i could get through his countermeasures and be said git :)

I will be doing a super magical foot army, fairly slow. Followed by a fast army that hits stuff while still being pretty damned magical. I have written both at 2000 points and may post both lists when i have checked through them. I look forward to using both armies and to painting them (kinda) lol :D

Just thought i'd share my thoughts. Also has anyone else prepared for the eventuality of a dragon showingup in 2000 points? Any plans for dealing with them?

Wood elf list

So here is the list Im planning to build

Wardancer Highborn, Blades of Loec, Nettlings

Lv2 Spell Singer, Scroll, Stave

Lv2 Spell Singer, Scroll, Befuddlement of Mischeif

BSB, Moonstone of the Hidden Ways, Talisan of Protection, Light Armour

10 Glade Guard

5 Scouts

5 Glade Riders, Musician

19 Eternal Guard, Full Command

9 Wardancers, Full Command

9 Wardancers, Full Command

7 Wild Riders, Full Command, War Banner

Great Eagle

Quite a fast army and hits hard in combat.

I managed to get a game in today with them (have most of the models, planning to paint £30 a month), and won fairly convincingly.

Played a beastman army which was huge!

Beastlord of Khorne
Bsb of Tzeench
2 Lv 2 Shamans
4 Beastheards (2 at 20 strong, 2 at 10 strong)
2 Dog units (5 in each)
19 Khorngor
3 Minotuars
2 Chariots
2 Spawn

Managed to kill the Beastlord and Khorngor in turn 2. Postioned the eagle so they had to charge, instead of fleeing like he expected I held. Was of course killed but then he had to overrun. Went into my eternal guard and was flanked by my Wardancer lord and his dancer mates.

What I learnt from the game:

Wardancers can be very hard to shift, took a charge from the minotuars and won the combat thanks to the 4+ ward save dance.

Need to be more aggressive with wild riders, past 2 games they have been charged, which shouldn't really happen!

C&C welcome guys!

Doooooooom on you!

think they have come up abit small on here but you get the idea i hope... this is my doom wheel done (apart from the glue drying on the base, and the flag)

I'm unsure about the red on the icon across the wheels. I'm thinking of a purple theme for the army as i think the red is just common, and maybe it should be the same colour as the robes.. haven't done the flag yet as I haven't decided on symbols.

What do you think?

ps. sorry about the poor quality pics.. taken at low light evening time

Army list, completed so far.

Hi all!

Having had far too much spare time at work than I care to mention lately I have had the chance to read the skaven codex and get a better idea of the background etc. So I have come up with a list that I think will be fun, maybe competitive, but allows for some interesting creations! Let me know what you think...

Grey seer (rival hide, world's edge armour, pipes of piebald, warpstone token)
-screaming bell
(pushing it) - 30 storm vermin (no flying magic standard, sheilds)

Warlock Engineer (level 2 wizard, warpstone armour, augmented weapons)

10 Globbadiers (bombadier, death globe, wind globe mortar!)

5 gutter runners (poisoned attackes, snare nets, warp grinder!)

Doomwheel

Warplightning Cannon

25 clan rats (standard sheilds, Doomflyer!)

20 clan rats (standard rattling gun)

25 skaven slaves

25 skaven slaves

option for one less unit of skaven slaves and leaders for each clan/stormvermin unit, and a deathrunner with smoke bombs for the gutter runners???
what do you think?

Looking forward to converting a wind globe mortar and a doomflyer!! :)

p.s. I've nearly finished my doom wheel, just needs basing and the flag doing, bases are all done for the stormvermin just got to build afew more and then paint them

Thanks

Another new member!

Hi guys,

Just like Jamie I was invited to join this by Sam, so thanks for the invite! A little about myself, Im also ex-gw and have just moved up to Glasgow and dont really know anyone so being able to share ideas on something like this is really good for me. Ive been doing the hobby for many years now yet Ive never really commited the time to doing a really nice showpiece army before....until now!

So enough about me and more about the tale of my army. Im gonna admit from the start that Im doing this army for the building and painting side of it more than the gaming. That being said though, the creation of this army is for the Warhammer doubles tournament, which I believe is in April. I know that this isnt entirely how you guys are using the project so carry on sifting through my post and Ill ask a few questions at the end.

The army I have chosen is Night Goblins. I have read through all of your posts before I joined and in reference to the question of competetive Vs theme my army is 100% theme! I know I plan to take this army to a tournament but my single goal at the tournament is to aim for a nomination for the best army award, even if it means I lose every game!

The theme of the army is purely Night Goblins and cave creatures they have captured. There will be no common goblins, nor Orcs, unless they have a very good reason to fit into my theme. Ive been thinking of this army for a few months now but only started building it a week or so ago so my timing is perfect.

Now, I have a few questions to put to you guys, as what I want out of this project might be a little different from you guys. I respect that this is your website and your rules so I leave the decisions to you.

1) Initially I only plan to go to 1500 pts. If this runs on until October I could easily add 500 Im sure but for now Im planning 1500 so the hobby projects you set will relate to my heroes instead of lords, etc. Is that ok with you?

2) Costing. I plan to heavily convert almost everything in this army. How should I cost my purchases each month? For example, in month 1 I want to do a unit of 10 spider riders. That would cost £18, however they way I have them planned means I need to buy the spider riders, a box of goblins and hobby materials like balsa wood. Should I cost it as £18 for a unit of spider riders or more realisticly £45?

Its up to you guys whether you want everyone to be working to the same goal and the same rules or whether you think it might be fun to watch how we each approach the idea of building an army. Id personally like to see how some go for power and build the army fast to get it on the table, compared to others who really dive into a theme and focus on the art of the army. As I said, I respect that this is your thing and your rules so let me know what you think.

Also, what are the rules for posting? I notice that nobody has put any pictures yet. Do we only post finished work at the end of the month or can we post work in progress pictures along the way?

I promise that no other posts I make will be this long!!!

Theme vs. Competitiveness

Something I've been thinking about....

I decided to do Clan pestilens because i liked the idea of them as a theme.

Problem is many of the more competitive units aren't.....well....diseased enough to be Clan Pestilens.

Hell Pit Abominations are obviously Clan Moulder.
Jezzails, Warp Lightning Cannons etc. are Clan Skryre
Clan Eshin units are less of an issue as assassins for hire can appear in any army or for that matter against any army........

A Clan Skryre themed army is perfectly viable as is a Clan Moulder army.
Clan Pestilens with virtually every ranged unit being Strength 2 not so much so. Pretty much every unit being Frenzied doesn't help either, lol.

So if i decide to theme the army around Clan Pestilens (which i obviously have) i effectively handicap myself if i stick to 'Plague' units only.

Don't i?

All of this rambling is leading to a question so bear with me.

In 40K I'd regularly (okay all the time) write an army to win....and then model it so it was themed (at least in my mind). But if that meant mixing 3 different Traitor Legions or putting Khorne and Slaanesh in the same army I'd do it without a 2nd thought.

So,

If i take Jezzails but make them as..for example giant blowpipes (a bit silly i know) or make a Hellpit Abomination as a giant diseased worm thing (something i'm genuinely considering) is that cheating myself for competitiveness or does that still count as theme?

I'd be interested to know what you all think.

On the Scavenge.

If anybody has built (or knows anybody who has) their Screaming Bell as an actual Screaming Bell rather than a Plague Furnace could please donate the spare Plague Furnace parts to me.

I could do with the 'Wrecking Ball' bits for a couple of Plague Catapults i'm planning on building.
Of course if anyone want's to donate the Plague Priest bits as well it would be much appreciated.

I don't have many Fantasy parts in exchange but i do have a ridiculous amount of 40K Marine/Chaos/IG bits i can offer in return.

Thanks in advance.

Garreth.

Early Hobby Debt

My Battlion came to £53.85 so I'm already in some debt that will have to be paid off in the next 2 months and I feel that I'll have to get creative with the VAT.
Bilt all the clanrats and the slaves may tackle the plague monks tonight though doing hobby is difficult in the b+b!

"the Tale of 4(+) Gamers"

This is how Jamie has put our hobby challenge, we are now 4(+) gamers.....

this being the case I'm gonna jump right in and say i don't want a rosarius (sounds girly), i don't want an iron halo (would just get in the way). So i would like to go for a refractor field for my 4+.

I realise this is completely pointless and off track but still a part of me felt the need to waste your time :)

Adam

Tree Hugging Hippies!

Hey everyone,
I was very kindly invited by Sam to take part in the Tale of 4(+) Gamers, so let me introduce myself.

My name is Jamie and Ive been playing Warhammer for far to many years!
I managed to get on something of a roll this year with army painting and want to continue into 2010.

So to this end Im going to be doing Wood Elves for the tale, mainly because I have a High and Dark Elf army and want to complete the set!

I want my Woodies to be only elves, no trees and mainly themed towards Wardancers as they are one of my fav units in the game.

So Ill be spending the entire £50 on Wardancers which I worked out to be 21 of them!

Looking forward to seeing everyones work!

Months purchase

So I realised that the lightning cannon is mail order only, so I went and got a doom wheel :) and some stormvermin... so thats my £50 for the start :)

Clan Pestilens.....

In a classic move i popped into Games Workshop to buy a box of Night Goblins and walked out with the 'Battle for Skull Pass' starter set.

Why Night Goblins you ask?

Well you probably didn't ask but i'm going to tell you anyway.

After reading the Skaven background i have decided that Night Gobbo's will make excellent Skavenslaves. Also, the 'hooded' look will match the Clan Pestilens theme nicely.

Unfortunately 60 additional models has only added 120 points to my army, lol.

Basic army now consists of

Plague Priest on Plague Furnace
Plague Monks x30 w/Full Command and banner of 'No flying for anyone this turn and by the way your shooting sucks as well'
2 x 30 Clanrats w/ Full Command
3 x 20 Skavenslaves

Next Additions will most likely be

2nd Plague Priest on Plague Furnace
Another 30x Plague Monks to push the above

Slightly more long term projects (due to needing conversion work) will be

Plague Catapult
Hell Pit Abomination (Suitably diseased looking as anything Clan Moulder can do Clan Pestilens can do better)

Yes More Skeven

The novelty is definitely wearing off with three of us doing them, though I was first and the rest of you are all rubbish (got to embrace true Skaven teamwork early). We're only technically on the same side. (Can't trust the others not to stab me in the back on the battlefield)
That said I'm thinking big with my army and I can't get everything that I want into 2000 points, for a start. I want a clan army united under the "banner"/threat of the Grey Seer leading it though he wont appear until 3000 points when he has some other subordinates to blame.

In light of that, I unlike everybody else will start with a battalion (trust the only still practicing manager hay) Ultimately I get what I want plus some rat ogres free which I may not even use in the end though its early days yet so can't tell what I want. But it will be big!

Magic dice!!!

I thought it might be interesting if we compared the amount of power and dispel dice we have in our proposed lists.

You know to see which armies are going magic and which are going to punch you in the face. Also because although i know i get a ridiculous number of dice i don't feel its enough, and seeing the number of dice you guys get might make me feel better :)

Vampires:
So with my turbo charged level 4, 3 level 2's and 2 pool dice;

Power dice; 14
Dispel dice; 7

Extras; If my lord kills stuff i get extra dice, and i'll be having a stick of +1 to cast and dispel :D

ok guys,

So I'm going to do a Clan Skyre as I like the techy stuffs. my first purchase is going to be storm vermin and a warp lightning cannon as it looks like great fun!!!

High Elves

Hey everyone ....

OK - Well I guess its fair to say I have been railroaded into taking a High Elves army - mostly because I would have taken Dark Elves - but thought I'd let my bddy have a go with them....Despite the fact I think the High Elves are a better representation of James than me....

Well the army ... It will have White Lions and Sword Masters .... most likely a nasty Dragon as well. My biggest challenege will be commiting to the painting timeline - I have a nasty tendancy of painting each model like its a character or lord choice. So we'll see what happens there.

I haven't actually been out and bought my models yet - but will do soon. Main reason ... Im moving on the 10th and don't want to be worried about breaking them etc.

Well heres to a great event and task .....

a quick jolly .... I met the GF's mum for the first time the other day. The first thing she asked .... so hows your the toy soldiers??lol. Officially labeled a geek at the first hurdle. lol

Cheers everyone and good luck....you will need it!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!!

IT'S CHRISTMAS!!!!!

Time to get jolly and festively plump, unless of course you're called toby in which case you're festively plump all year round :D

Monday, 30 November 2009

I'll be doing a Clan Pestilens themed Skaven army centred around a Plague furnace (or maybe 2 i haven't fully decided yet).
My December/January project will be a Plague Furnace and the Plague Monks that will be pushing it.
At the moment i'm just picking things i like the look of, I'll worry about making it a bit more competitive when we reach the 'having to play games' part of the challenge.
Hi all,

OK so I was thinking of doing Skaven, although it seems as though there are a few of us doing them, none the less i have bought the codex and am thinking of writing a list. I have a feeling that painting stuff in a month is quite a big ask (depending on how much people work in normal lives) so no sure if i'll be racking up many points that way, and I also want them to be abit better than a 3 colour min especially if going to a GT.

Anyway hopefully by tomorrow i might have a list to start to put together.

WIP - Snow Elves!

Well, snow bases anyway!

Some of you may be surprised to know that I'll be using white quite heavily in my colour scheme...

Adam Flello - Vampire Counts

I will be doing a magic heavy Vampire list (suprise suprise).

For our first section I will be doing 3 boxes of skeletons and 1 box of ghouls. This makes £48.

In addition to keep up with my army i will also do a box of zombies for raising.

Also some form of Battle Standard Bearer for the modelling project. I'm thinking a heavily converted Strigoi Vampire for that, but we'll see :)

Adam

Adam Flello - Vampire Counts

{also copied from a Comment}

Couple of questions jimbo.

Is the modelling project to be within budgets or surplus?

And being a vampire for april I have no war machines... It could be a corpse cart or black coach? Thats as close as they get.

I have worked out that my 2000 point list will be done come half of aprils budget, but being vampires I need another half an army too raise, so I may throw in more stuff along the way, but I will inform you of extras as you've stated above.

Adam

Gareth Morton - Skaven

{copied from a 'Comment'}

Doing Skaven!!!

Due to the fact that 2000 points equals 500 Clan Rats or 1000 Skavenslaves i have already gone way over-budget for month 1, lol.

I have so far bought 3 boxes of Plague Monks, 3 boxes of Clanrats and a Plague Furnace which comes to around about the £150 mark.

If i have the Furnace and the monks as my Month 1+2 projects will that be okay?

Posting

Ok, just realised no-one can post unless I authorise them as Authors (doh!)! Can you send me your email address if you want to be able to post and I'll add you! Cheers

In the meantime you can Comment...

James Seals - Dark Elves

So, thought I'd better be the first, this being my baby and all...

I'm going for Dark Elves, with a focus on magic, and Executioners (I'm still pissed off that I can't take a Lord with The Executioners Axe in my Executioners unit, but I'll get over that...).

I didn't want Corsairs so I didn't get the Battalion box. Instead I bought 2 boxes of Dark Elf Warriors and 1 box of Dark Elf Cold One Riders. Total £48 which is the same as the Battalion, although I got more Warriors and better options for them by the looks of things.

Right, time to get building!!!!

James

A Tale of 1 GW Manager, 2 Ex GW Managers, and 1 Ex Staff Member (or 4 Gamers - you decide)

Actually, the way things are going, it's more likely to be the tale of 23 gamers but there we go...

So, after much discussion, pondering and wondering it is now almost time to begin our tale. Effectively the plan for us all to get painted a 2,000 point fantasy army in a reasonable time by providing each other with some moral support and gentle prodding to get it done. Similar to the series that has been run in White Dwarf from time to time each Gamer will have a monthly budget to spend on shiny new toy soldiers. They will be tasked with building and painting those models within the month. Points will be awarded for completion of said task, with bonus points for mini-modelling projects along the way, and also for games played in the month. At the end the person with the most points wins all of our admiration and respect. Easy peasy!

For the first 2 months we'll have a combined budget of £50 which represents a battalion box (although most of us aren't buying a battalion box and just getting an equivalent value of models). After that each month the budget will be £30. Each person should go onto this blog at the beginning of the month and list the models they've bought. At the end of the month you need to post pictures of your (hopefully) completed models. Each month will also have a modelling project - you should post pictures of this as well then we can vote on who's is the best. Also, from month 4 onwards, you can get points if you've played any games - only the best result counts though. Please provide a battle report (doesn't have to be long).

Sam (who is taking Skaven and so can be forgiven) has brought up the fact that some people will need to spend more than £30 per month to get their army done. If you're going to do that please tell us all of the models you're going to buy at the beginning of the month and you'll be judged on finishing all of them - only fair really.

The points will work as follows:

All models built - 1 point
All models painted to '3 colour standard' - 3 points
All models based - 1 point
Modelling project attempted - 3 points
Best modelling project - 3 points
2nd best modelling project - 2 points
3rd best modelling project - 1 point
Lost a game - 1 point
Drew a game - 2 points
Won a game - 3 points
Battle report - 1 point

The modelling projects will be:

December/January - Standard Bearer
February - Hero or Lord
March - Wizard
April - War Machine
May - Monster (with or without rider)

I think we should aim to have a 500 point army by the end of February, 1000 by the end of April. That way we could get together for a Doubles Tournament or something in May. I think some of us would also like to consider going to the Grand Tournament for Fantasy next year with our army - it'd be cool if we all went for the same heat...

So, without further ado, please consider this competition OPEN! Get posting with your purchases for month 1&2 and then get building and painting. Good luck!
