Another new member!

Hi guys,

Just like Jamie I was invited to join this by Sam, so thanks for the invite! A little about myself, Im also ex-gw and have just moved up to Glasgow and dont really know anyone so being able to share ideas on something like this is really good for me. Ive been doing the hobby for many years now yet Ive never really commited the time to doing a really nice showpiece army before....until now!

So enough about me and more about the tale of my army. Im gonna admit from the start that Im doing this army for the building and painting side of it more than the gaming. That being said though, the creation of this army is for the Warhammer doubles tournament, which I believe is in April. I know that this isnt entirely how you guys are using the project so carry on sifting through my post and Ill ask a few questions at the end.

The army I have chosen is Night Goblins. I have read through all of your posts before I joined and in reference to the question of competetive Vs theme my army is 100% theme! I know I plan to take this army to a tournament but my single goal at the tournament is to aim for a nomination for the best army award, even if it means I lose every game!

The theme of the army is purely Night Goblins and cave creatures they have captured. There will be no common goblins, nor Orcs, unless they have a very good reason to fit into my theme. Ive been thinking of this army for a few months now but only started building it a week or so ago so my timing is perfect.

Now, I have a few questions to put to you guys, as what I want out of this project might be a little different from you guys. I respect that this is your website and your rules so I leave the decisions to you.

1) Initially I only plan to go to 1500 pts. If this runs on until October I could easily add 500 Im sure but for now Im planning 1500 so the hobby projects you set will relate to my heroes instead of lords, etc. Is that ok with you?

2) Costing. I plan to heavily convert almost everything in this army. How should I cost my purchases each month? For example, in month 1 I want to do a unit of 10 spider riders. That would cost £18, however they way I have them planned means I need to buy the spider riders, a box of goblins and hobby materials like balsa wood. Should I cost it as £18 for a unit of spider riders or more realisticly £45?

Its up to you guys whether you want everyone to be working to the same goal and the same rules or whether you think it might be fun to watch how we each approach the idea of building an army. Id personally like to see how some go for power and build the army fast to get it on the table, compared to others who really dive into a theme and focus on the art of the army. As I said, I respect that this is your thing and your rules so let me know what you think.

Also, what are the rules for posting? I notice that nobody has put any pictures yet. Do we only post finished work at the end of the month or can we post work in progress pictures along the way?

I promise that no other posts I make will be this long!!!

Jay

  1. Most of us have taken the rules more as rough guidelines anyway (and that includes James who's idea it was in the first place), lol.

  2. Hey Jay.
Really lookin forward to seeing these gobbos and I haven't forgotten I said I would send you stuff I have. Im in the middle of sorting my many bitz boxes out so send me your address and Ill get some stuff together for you!

As for your comments, Im sure everyone is flexable and like it was said before its only guidelines! I would say your spiders would only cost £18 otherwise if you stick to the rules it would be a month and a halfs worth of the tale!

Also the doubles tourny is the 17th/18th April and tickets are on sale 25th Jan

  3. Yeah, um, rules is really important and you should stick to 'em rigidly!!!

Actually, the way I've interpreted my own rules is that anything that comes out of your bits box doesn't count in your budget. Now, if like me you had your bits box stolen and redistributed on ebay several years ago (or more likely sent to the tip) you may need to make a few more purchases than, for example, a GW manager in Low Wycombe who claims to have 4 copies of every model in circulation...

For example I've bought some Dark Elf shields to go with my Dark Elves to save me free-handing every shield. Haven't added that to the cost.

The main thing is this is for shits and giggles. There ain't no prizes other than the repsect and admiration of your fellow geeks so if you twist the rules to suit your needs then that's cool. The aim is for us all to get our armies painted at the end of the day...

Now, onto your army. An idea I had for a Night Goblin army (that I didn't do because I didn't think they were competitive enough!) was to have a Giant with its Night Goblin 'keepers'. You could have the Giant striding along with a load of Goblins hanging onto bits of rope tied to it's arms and legs (easy enough to do with some string and a pin running through it). My ideas was also to have 1 Night Goblin stood at the front of the base with its palm outstretched in a "STOP!" kind of pose. Anyway, as I'm, now not gonna do that I thought I should pass it on in case it inspires you at all.

I personally have posted 1 picture - my snow bases! As I only got the shields yesterday I haven't got round to painting any models yet but 5 are undercoated and I should get them done this weekend. I will be posting pictures asking for thoughts before I continue painting the rest of the army the same way...
