Stand(ard) and deliver!!!

Holla guys.

After seeing Rich's Stormvermin's standard i thought I'd finish my own standard bearer off. After all i might as well get January's entry in early, he is made from various spares from the empire kits and will be my captain with battle standard (using it as the Griffon standard) for in game use. I decided to have a crack at the Ostland Elector Count's (Valmir Von Raukov) personal banner, it's my first attempt at freehand banner painting so any comments & feedback would be ace guys, sorry about the varied quality of pics, i'm using a camera im not used too.....

Any comments welcome!

  1. Pretty good symmetry on the freehand I always find thats the hardest part about painting icons etc especially when curves are involved. Are you going to do some writing on the top parchment? Can see you have used blending well on the cheeks! haha what are you thoughts on the reverse side? I've always been in two minds, but sway more to something should be there, then the arguement becomes about it being a reverse image (ie the back of what you see on the front through the clothe), or the image the right way around so people can read it?

  2. For a double-sided banner see the Crimson Fists Captain in the Space Marine Codex (there's a White Dwarf article about it as well)...

I think this banner looks really smart, Adam, top drawer!

I'm really nervous about both of mine (although only one is for the task). I need to paint the claw with the moon on my shield freehand which I'm certain will be very challenging, to say the least. My plan was to firstly practice drawing it on paper a lot, then progress from drawing it on paper to actually painting it on paper. That way I should get a good feel for the scale etc...

  3. Thats your first attempt at free hand! There is a word for people like you, starts with G, ends in T and as I in the middle!

    Really good job, very impressed.

Did you draw it on first or just paint it on?
